Stu Ostro

Senior Director of Weather Communications
The Weather Channel

A native of Somerville, NJ, Mr. Ostro had a fascination with the weather by the age of three. Thanks to a phobia of thunder and lightning, the desire to be a meteorologist was firmly established!

Nearly thirty years ago while attending Penn State University, Stu began delivering weather forecasts to the public, via radio stations served by the university's Campus Weather Service.

Upon receiving his B.S. in Meteorology, Stu's professional career ensued at Accu-Weather as a Forecaster, then a Senior Forecaster. His responsibilities included giving weather forecasts live and on tape to radio stations, as well as providing predictions to clients in the television, utility, and ski industries.

Since 1989, Stu has been with The Weather Channel and his current duties as Senior Director of Weather Communications include leading the team of severe weather, hurricane, and climate experts at The Weather Channel. Stu says, "given my lifelong fascination with the weather, it's truly a thrill to be working with this group."

He began occasionally appearing on-camera during major storms in the early 1990s, including such historic events as the "Halloween Storm" of 1991 (on which the bestseller, The Perfect Storm is based), Hurricane Andrew, and the Superstorm of March 1993. Since then he has imparted analysis to viewers during many hurricanes and other weather scenarios. These days, he's responsible for many behind-the-scenes aspects of weather coverage on the network, including being meteorological advisor for the show Storm Stories and being a featured contributor to The Weather Channel blog.

In 1995, The Weather Channel sent Stu to the Great Plains for the filming of a documentary on storm chasers. He is featured in it (the crew witnessed 3 tornadoes and experienced hail larger than baseballs!), and has appeared in a number of other programs produced by The Weather Channel.

Stu has participated in Project SafeSide as well as content for many projects for weather.com and The Weather Channel, such as Storms of the Century. He writes articles on various topics for weather.com and USA Weekend, and has given many talks to the public and representatives from the media and emergency management.
